Culver City First Birthday Photographer

If you’re planning your baby’s first birthday, you’ve probably spent hours scrolling Pinterest trying to find the perfect theme.

Maybe you’ve saved football ideas.

Or looked at cake smash inspiration.

Maybe you’ve wondered…

“Can someone actually create something completely custom just for my baby?”

The answer is absolutely yes.

At The Pod Photography, every first birthday session begins with one question:

“What makes your family unique?”

For this little guy, the answer was sports.

Not just any sports.

A story that had been part of Mom and Dad’s relationship long before he was born.

They grew up together as high school sweethearts, but they cheered for rival NFL teams.

Mom loved the Broncos.

Dad was a Steelers fan.

When they named their son Ezekiel Aaron Swartz, inspiration struck.

EA Swartz.

Just like EA Sports.

That tiny spark of an idea became one of the most creative first birthday sessions we’ve ever designed.

They Flew Across the Country for One Photo Session

One of the first things people ask when they see these photos is,

“Did they already happen to be visiting Los Angeles?”

No.

They booked flights specifically for this session.

They landed that morning.

Came straight to our Culver City studio.

Celebrated their son’s first birthday.

Then flew home immediately afterward.

That still amazes us.

It’s one of the greatest compliments we could ever receive.

They told us they couldn’t find another photographer creating experiences like this.

So they came to us.

As a Culver City first birthday photographer, moments like this remind us why we pour so much creativity into every custom design.

Every Great Theme Starts With a Story

Rather than decorating with generic football props, we wanted every set to feel intentional.

This wasn’t just football.

It was their family’s story.

So we designed the entire experience around the feeling of an elite athlete’s game day.

Every set became another chapter.

Chapter One: Media Day

We started with a clean white seamless backdrop.

Bright.

Minimal.

Editorial.

Almost like a Nike campaign or the cover shoot for a sports magazine.

Ezekiel wore a simple “Game Day” outfit while holding an oversized television remote like a microphone during an athlete interview.

Then we designed his own custom sports magazine cover featuring EA Swartz.

The portraits felt modern, playful, and completely different from a traditional first birthday session.

Chapter Two: Game Day

Then it was time for kickoff.

Our cake smash transformed into a football stadium complete with:

  • stadium backdrop
  • football field flooring
  • balloons in both team colors
  • footballs
  • baby shoulder pads
  • custom birthday cake
  • giant ONE letters
Instead of choosing between Mom’s Broncos or Dad’s Steelers…

We celebrated both.

The result felt playful, personal, and unmistakably theirs.

Throughout the session, Ezekiel explored the field, crawled toward the cake, laughed at the footballs, and completely embraced his role as the star player.

Cake smash sessions should feel like this.

Not simply messy…

But memorable.

Chapter Three: Recovery

Every athlete needs recovery.

So naturally…

Our little MVP finished his training day in an ice bath.

Well…

It looked like an ice bath.

Instead of real ice, we used warm water filled with realistic acrylic ice cubes inside a tabletop cooler.

The illusion was perfect.

More importantly…

Ezekiel stayed warm, happy, and completely comfortable while giving us some of the sweetest bathtub portraits imaginable.

It became the perfect ending to his sports-themed birthday story.

Why Custom Cake Smash Sessions Are So Meaningful

Pinterest is full of beautiful ideas.

But your child’s first birthday only happens once.

Rather than recreating someone else’s vision, we love designing sessions that feel deeply personal.

Sometimes that means celebrating:

  • family traditions
  • favorite hobbies
  • cultural heritage
  • beloved books
  • travel
  • careers
  • inside jokes
  • sports rivalries
Those personal details are what transform portraits into family heirlooms.

Frequently Asked Questions About First Birthday Sessions

Can you create a completely custom cake smash theme?

Absolutely.

Many of our favorite sessions begin with nothing more than a conversation about your family.

How far in advance should we book?

We recommend reserving your first birthday session two to three months before your baby’s birthday.

This gives us plenty of time to design custom sets and source special props.

Do families really travel for sessions?

They do.

We’ve welcomed families from across California—and occasionally from across the country—who wanted a one-of-a-kind first birthday experience.

Do you design everything?

Yes.

Every custom session begins with a collaborative design process where we build a concept around your family’s story.

More Than a Cake Smash

The best first birthday sessions aren’t really about cake.

They’re about celebrating an entire year of growth, laughter, milestones, and the people who love your child most.

If you’re searching for a Culver City first birthday photographer, we’d love to help create something that could only belong to your family.

Because no one else’s story is exactly like yours.
