One of the questions we hear most often as a Beverly Hills baby photographer is:
“Should I schedule my baby’s milestone photos at 6 months or wait until 7 months?”
The answer?
It depends less on your baby’s birthday… and more on their development.
While these portraits are often called “6-month photos,” the very best milestone sessions usually happen when babies are sitting confidently on their own.
For many little ones, that’s somewhere between 6 and 7 months old.
This sweet little guy was right at that exciting stage of discovery.
Big smiles.
Endless curiosity.
A personality that was beginning to shine.
It’s one of our favorite ages to photograph because babies are becoming wonderfully expressive while still delightfully fascinated by the world around them.

Why Sitting Up Changes Everything
The biggest developmental milestone we look for isn’t a specific age.
It’s independent sitting.
Once babies can comfortably sit without support, an entirely new world of portraits becomes possible.
They can:
- sit confidently
- interact with props
- laugh naturally
- clap
- reach for toys
- show their personalities
This opens the door for creative storytelling and allows us (as a Beverly Hills baby photographer) to capture much more variety than is possible just a few weeks earlier.

6 Months vs. 7 Months: What’s the Difference?
Every baby develops at their own pace, but here’s a general guide:
Around 6 Months
Many babies are:
- beginning to sit with minimal support
- smiling easily
- grabbing toys
- discovering textures
- fascinated by people
Some babies still need a spotter nearby for balance.
Around 7 Months
Many babies are:
- sitting independently
- laughing constantly
- reaching in every direction
- showing big personalities
- making eye contact
- clapping
- exploring everything around them
For photographers, this is often the “sweet spot.”
It’s one of the happiest stages before babies become constantly on the move.

Two Themes. One Big Personality.
As a Beverly Hills baby photographer, one of the things we love most about milestone sessions is designing multiple sets that celebrate your baby’s personality.
For this little guy, we created two completely different adventures.
The first was a cozy camping scene complete with a tiny tent, lantern, campfire, string lights, and woodland touches.
Watching him explore the set felt exactly like watching a little adventurer discovering the outdoors for the first time.
Then we shifted into something completely different.
A colorful Sesame Street-inspired setup filled with bright balloons, familiar characters, alphabet blocks, and a vintage bathtub that quickly became one of his favorite places to play.
By creating multiple looks during one session, families receive a gallery that feels playful, varied, and full of personality.

The Smiles That Only Last a Few Months
Some stages disappear almost overnight.
That gummy grin.
Those chunky baby thighs.
The way babies proudly sit up after months of trying.
It’s easy to think you’ll remember these little details forever.
But time has a way of moving much faster than we expect.
That’s why milestone photography isn’t simply about documenting age.
It’s about preserving a season of life you’ll never experience again.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my baby isn’t sitting yet?
That’s perfectly okay.
We’ll adjust posing based on your baby’s development, or we may recommend waiting just a few weeks.
Do milestone sessions include multiple sets?
Yes!
Most families choose two or more themed sets plus timeless portraits.
What should my baby wear?
Simple outfits photograph beautifully, but themed wardrobe pieces can add personality and storytelling.
When should I book?
We recommend reserving your session around your baby’s fifth month so we can schedule around their developmental milestones rather than a specific birthday.

Your Milestone Session
Your baby’s first year is filled with incredible changes.
One day they’re learning to sit.
The next they’re crawling across the room.
These milestones pass in the blink of an eye.
If you’re looking for a Beverly Hills baby photographer to capture this exciting stage, we’d love to help preserve these memories with a milestone session designed just for your family.
