Photographing events is such a fun and special time to celebrate with a family! I personally love being a candid event photographer because 1. I love observing people 2. Who doesn’t love the fun, care-free attitude of guests at a birthday party and 3. I know how much planning has gone into the party and how important the preservation of these memories is!
My philosophy when photographing an event is to capture a mix of ultra close up detail shots of the food, party favors, decorations and any other special touches that I know were inspired by hours with a Pinterest board and scrolling through Etsy. Next up it’s the overviews – the shots that tell the bigger picture of where the party was, how many people, and just the overall mood of the event. Then comes the fun part: the candids! This is my favorite part of events, especially kids parties, because it’s those real moments when people are laughing, interacting and cutting loose that tell the real story of the event. During the party I’m always walking around with my long lens – so that I am not obtrusive – and just observing and listening. When I hear a group of people talking and I can tell that the punchline to a joke is coming soon, I’ll hustle over to them and get ready to capture the laughs. There are truly very few things in life that feel more satisfying to me than hitting that shutter at the exact perfect second and capturing a flattering, genuine moment that will be a great photo that person will cherish.
Lovely Jasmine’s 2nd Birthday party took place at a private home in Beverly Hills and was just such a great time! My favorite little touch were the borrowed bunny rabbits that the guests could interact with. Oh, and of course the life size Cat in the Hat character! It was hilarious watching some children totally love him while others took quite a bit of warming up.
